King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) is adopting the latest technology to enhance its library services, including protecting library materials and facilities, and providing library users with safe, comfortable spaces. As part of this initiative, KFUPM Library is using radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology-based self-service checkout and check-in machines to optimize the management of its collections.

The technology has been supplied and installed by Naseej, a leading provider of library integrated RFID solutions, in cooperation with smart services provider bibliotheca. The new security and self-service systems are top-of-the-line technologies developed for use in the smart service sector and comply with international standards for the provision of library services.

The new technologies include:
– Security Gate System based on RFID technology
– Staff workstations equipped to activate and deactivate book labels Self-service checkout and check-in systems
– The latest models of electronic book scanning devices.

RFID technology enables the move from manpower to self-service circulation. With patrons able to check out items themselves, quickly and efficiently, RFID self-service checkout systems reduce clients’ waiting time and libraries’ staffing needs. By investing in RFID technology, KFUPM Library has been able to redirect its efforts to provide better customer service while eliminating a huge amount of manual work.
The project replaces the former system of using EM security strips.
In addition to supplying and installing the new technology, Naseej is providing technical support and consultation, in partnership and cooperation with the university, in order to serve its strategic and professional goals and its vision of higher education in the Kingdom.
